Becoming a donor
We are always in need of egg and sperm donations to assist with some IVF fertility treatments. Many couples rely on donors to come forward to assist them in achieving their dream of becoming parents.
Sperm donors
Wessex Fertility is licensed by the HFEA as a sperm bank. Sperm donors are carefully health screened and should be aged between 20 and 40, fit and healthy and available to make several visits to us here at The Freya Centre in Southampton over a six month period.
Perhaps you and/or a friend or relative might like to become a sperm donor. It could make such a difference to a couple who, without the help of a donor are otherwise unable to have their much wanted family.
The donation process is not time consuming and is very discrete. Our environment is comfortable and our friendly team are experienced in managing sperm donation programmes. If you would like to talk this through, please make contact with us and we can provide you with more information.
A limited financial contribution is available to sperm donors to help cover the cost of time and travel.
Egg donors
We have many couples waiting for donated eggs. These couples are otherwise young, healthy and fit but for various reasons are unable to produce their own eggs to make a baby.
There are two methods of becoming an egg donor:
- Shared Egg Programme: This is where a couple requiring fertility treatment themselves, use their own eggs and also donate eggs for one other couple who cannot produce their own. The donor should be fit and healthy, a non smoker and under 35. In return, it may be possible for the 'donor' couple to have their treatment cycle at a reduced cost. Please ask for more detail including other health criteria which should be met.
- Altruistic Egg Donors: Altruistic egg donors provide their own eggs as a generous gift to others. Altruistic Egg Donors "Do something amazing" for others - rather like blood donors. Altruistic egg donors have already completed their own family, they are non smokers, fit, healthy and under 35. If you, or a friend or relative would like to become an altruistic egg donor, please ask for more detail which will include other health criteria which should be met.
- Embryo Donation: You may consider this if you have frozen embryos in storage that you do not wish to use yourself. All prospective donors should discuss the implications of this decision with our counsellor.
