Harmony Prenatal Test Results are Reliable

Harmony Prenatal Testing

When you become pregnant, you want reliable information about your pregnancy and the health of your baby. The Harmony prenatal test accuracy helps expectant mothers have peace of mind. The test is used by soon-to-be-mothers all over the world. In fact, more than 1 million pregnancies have undergone this testing.

Why the Harmony Prenatal Test is Important

The Harmony prenatal test analyses a blood sample from the expectant mother during her pregnancy from week 10. The basic principle of prenatal testing is to offer an accessible, safe, and accurate test to all pregnant women to identify those with increased chromosomal abnormalities.
The Harmony prenatal test was initially developed to provide more accurate Down syndrome screening for women in any risk category and of any age. Traditional blood tests can miss around 20% of Down syndrome cases during pregnancy. The Harmony test provides far more accurate results.

Is the Harmony Prenatal Test Invasive?

Whenever we recommend the Harmony prenatal test to expectant mothers, the natural and understandable question is ‘how invasive is the test?’ The Harmony prenatal test is a non-invasive blood test that provides peace of mind for both the mothers and their respective partners.

Why Should You Take the Harmony Prenatal Test?

As well as being non-invasive, the Harmony prenatal test has the added attraction of being more than 99% accurate in Down syndrome screening and fetal sex (if requested).

  • It provides clear answers to your questions
  • It is more accurate than traditional prenatal screening
  • There are fewer false alarms than traditional screening tests
  • The test’s success is proven by clinical evidence

The Experts Support Down Syndrome Screening

As many people know, there are genetic conditions that run in families. However, Down syndrome typically does not. Down syndrome can develop during any pregnancy. Although the risk of Down syndrome does increase with a woman’s age, most babies with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years of age.

The Harmony prenatal test can be carried out as early as 10 weeks, providing clarity for the expectant mother.

Who is the Harmony Test Suitable for?

At Wessex Fertility, we recommend that the Harmony test is suitable for all singleton and twin pregnancies, using either patient or donor eggs. Also, NHS patients who have a high chance of carrying a single or twin pregnancy with a chromosomal abnormality are advised to have the test, to avoid unnecessary invasive procedures. This does not apply in the case of a vanishing twin.

The Harmony test can be used to determine the sex of your baby. This part of the test is suitable for all singleton and twin pregnancies. However, with twins, a male result will mean that at least one of the babies is a male; with a female result both babies are female.

The Harmony Prenatal Test Involves 3 Simple Steps

One of the many great things about the Harmony test is how simple it is. In fact, the whole process is over in just 3 simple steps:

  1. At 10 weeks or later you have an ultrasound scan to date the pregnancy and also a sample of your blood is taken.
  2. Your blood sample is then sent to a laboratory to be analysed.
  3. We receive the results in about 5 working days, which we then talk through with you.

What Does the Harmony Prenatal Test Screen for?

The Harmony test screens for the most common chromosomal conditions, including:

Sex Chromosome Aneuploidies (SCA)

The Harmony Prenatal test screens the sex chromosomes. Most people have either two X chromosomes or one X and one Y chromosome in the cells in their body. If a sex chromosome aneuploidy is discovered with the test then this means that the fetus has a different number of X and/or Y chromosomes. The option of having this additional testing will be discussed at your appointment so that you can decide whether it is right for you. However, this option is not available for twin pregnancies.

22q11.2 Microdeletion

The Harmony prenatal test also looks for the absence of a small piece of chromosome. The absence of this small piece of chromosome is called 22q11.2 Microdeletion and is the most common genetic cause of Down syndrome, heart defects and intellectual disability.

Trisomies

Down syndrome (trisomy 21)

Patau syndrome (trisomy 13)

Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18)

These all have an additional chromosome.

Is There Anything the Harmony Test Will Not Detect?

Yes. The Harmony prenatal test will not detect complications such as Spina Bifida and any heart defects. Therefore, you will still be required to attend your 12 and 20 week scans (in addition to any other scans that may be arranged for you).

Is the Harmony Prenatal Test Available on the NHS?

Unfortunately, the Harmony Prenatal Test is not available on the NHS. However, as a private fertility clinic in the UK, we do provide the testing for all expectant mothers.

How much does the Harmony prenatal test cost?

At Wessex Fertility, the cost of a Harmony Test is £500, including your blood test and scan.

When is the Best Time to Take the Test?

As with many pregnancy tests, the Harmony prenatal test needs to be taken within a certain window of time. It is recommended that you take the test between 10 and 12 weeks, as it may be necessary to have further tests if the results highlight something particular.

What If You Get a High Risk Result?

If you get a high risk result, the first thing you should do is try not to panic. A high risk result does not necessarily mean your baby will have a chromosomal defect. If you receive a high risk result, try to remain as calm as possible. Wessex Fertility will communicate the results of the test to your healthcare provider and initiate a follow-up appointment to discuss further investigations.
You may be offered an amniocentesis, an invasive test that analyses a sample of amniotic fluid. This is a diagnostic test that provides a conclusive result in 98-99% of cases. Your healthcare provider will offer support and counselling.
